Travel: Pulong Tau National Park (Day 2)
My first site assessment begins today. I need to find a suitable place inside the park or adjacent to the park boundary. It is a bit challenging for me because I need to make sure this site is close (~5m) to any water sources, and flat area.
The first site that I went is a rocky stream near one of the villager’s farm. It is a nice place because of the accessibility and it has open and falt area. However, it is near the farm and the rocky stream has one side intact forest and the other side is this villager’s farm. So, it is a disturbed areas. One of the main concerns is the safety of the weather station which I will establish. While we were there, i got a chance to look around the farm. Uncle Lian grow a lot of fruit trees and vegetables.

I am going to Pulong Tau National Park for seven days and I am excited. I am thrilled to discover what new adventure awaits me at this new place. I never been to this park and not even Bario - the Kelabit Highlands - which is a famous tourist destination in Sarawak. I want to see the people, the place, and of course what animals and plants are living in this most interior parts of Sarawak.
This trip is for one of the project that I manage at my work. This project gave me a chance to explore at least three new Sarawak’s Totally Protected Areas: Pulong Tau NP, Maludam NP, and Tun Ahmad Zaidi Nature Reserve.
Today, I will fly to Bario via Miri and will transit Marudi. I fly from Kuching yesterday afternoon and overnight in Miri. I missed direct flight at noon because it was sold out so quickly. But, I am glad that I could get one so I can proceed with my trip. I am blessed to have my friend Fen this time because I have no idea how to plan trip rto this park. She helps me a lot with my arrangements especially with logistics. She have been working in this park for almost two years now. She knows every corner of the are. So, I learned a lot and can visualize a little bit how the areas looks like.
I am writing this entry while waiting for my flight to Marudi and then Bario later. I am going onboard now. I will update again once I get my internet connections. Wish me luck and pray that my trip will be smooth and all is well. Till; then!

Day 2: Movement Control Order (MCO)
It is so easy to get news online but it is so overwhelming and too much to bear. With the numbers of the new cases still adding to the curve, i only can hope and pray this will end soon.
My thoughts and prayers goes to everyone out there especially to the front liners. This morning i heard a dumping truck in my housing compound. I would like to thank them for they also working as usual despite this outbreak crisis. May God have mercy on us all and this will pass.

COVID19 and Movement Control Order
Today i feel so helpless and not sure what should i do. Maybe i am get used to wake up and get ready to work when it is weekdays. But, today is different because it feels like holiday but it is not. At the same time, i have been thinking about my parents at home. I wonder how are they doing now and how do they prepare themselves for this. To make it worst, i can not contact my sister whom stay and taking care of our parents. The telecommunications network is weak and limited in our village. I could't get in touch with her since Sunday.
I hope others will just stay at home and let us together combat this virus by contain our self at home and not contribute to spreading it.
Stay safe everyone and take precautions as advise by the Health Ministry. May God continue to protect us and bless us with good health and let's care for each other.

I am trying my best to stay positive and avoid the negative vibes that really get into me now. In this current situation i really feels like i am the most useless person in this workplace. I did try not to complaint anymore but it seems to be very hard to be here.

I Am Ready for 2014....
Since i will be going back home on Saturday, so i did a make over to my office with a little bit of decorations. Perhaps this will motivate me and make me keep moving forward with my new adventure next year with several wildlife inventories and monitoring.
Here is a little bit how my office looks like. I hope Mr.Rat will not chew any of the deco that i put up on the wall or on my table. I have a regular fan call Mr. Rat here. Keep on left its little po on my table. *sigh*. But that how it is here. Snakes and rats inside the office is a common thing.

When I surrounded by GREAT PEOPLE
Well, something that I want to share here is, the special moments when I am surrounded by great people. Who are these people? I have lots to mention in here because I am grateful to God that He gave me so much blessings since I am born by giving me a chance to meet great people. In these 32 years, God made my life colourful like a rainbow (maybe more colourful than a rainbow with all the other colours…ha ha ha). Why? Because I frequently meet new people, from strangers to best buddies or enemies (don’t you think that your enemy is the people that make you realize that, you can’t pleased or satisfy everyone?).
With good intention in your heart and treat people like you wanted you to be treated, then you can have a good relationship with people around you. Don’t you think so? This remind me of my mother useful advice when I make a decision to work outside from my home town in 2005. I know she worried that I can’t adapt to new place, new people, new culture, new environment. Well, I am her little baby girl, still! Ha ha ha ha..
She said this, “Mun gak kedau a, kak lalu subong. Masok kubo a, kak mengituk walau keja’an ji kedau lien. Tulong menak keja, kak mengakel. Dak dao tan gak kedau a.” Oh, this is in my native language. Let me translate. She said, “Don’t become an arrogant, when you are at other place. If you enter, people’s house respect. Help others with their task, don’t be lazy. Be good all the time”. Okay, more or less, it sounds like that. Correct me if I translate it wrongly. With this I think I did well up to now. Am I change? Hmmm… I am not sure. Maybe aging!! Ha ha ha ha..
Enough with that, allow me to share some pictures of people that mold me to become who I am today! Some I don’t have their pictures but I always keep them deep in my heart.

The Sanitary Project ~ Maliau Layung (Part 1)
![]() |
| View of one side of the houses in the village. |
Observing this scenario, my superior came up with a plan to start a sanitation project in three selected villages around this area. We are lucky because we have a very committed partner, the Raleigh International Borneo. With Raleigh International we welcome 36 high school students from Dr. Challoner’s High School, UK. They were accompanied by their teachers and assisted by Raleigh Project Managers. They have a total of 10 days with 8 days for completed the project in the selected villages.
I was assign to assist one of the groups named Charlie 3 to Kg. Maliau Layung, Pitas. Together with two Raleigh Project Managers and one teacher and her partner, we travel on the gravel road using 4WD. It takes us 1 hour 45 minutes to reach the village.

New Job?
However, when we successfully get the 'new job', and after sometimes, that new job become an 'old job' and something is not right again, the cycles seems to be continues. We will look for another 'new job'. So, what is actually the 'new job' because a new job is always turn into an old job and pissed us off?
So, what i can see is that, adapt to the new job well, adapt to new working scenario, adapt with the people around us, stick to our own work ethics, trying our best to achieved our goal in our job/work, practice not to complain about our boss, our co-workers but trying our best to manage the issues wisely and be brave to face the problems and the people which we have issue with. Never be afraid of our boss but always respect our boss. hmmmph... that is what i thought but all in all i still learn to practice some of it. Always easy to say it but very difficult to turn it into action. Yai!!!
How about you?

NIBANG ~ The New Adventure & Challenges (The Diary)
Diary #1 - Tired
I am almost dead today. Carrying my super duper heavy backpack with all kind of my belongings inside, all sorts of things I brought together for my three days stay in the village. Now, I am exhausted “tahap gaban”, all my back and my legs so painful now. It was two and a half hours walk crossing three rivers and four hills. Passing two different villages, I think its two villages but perhaps only one village with scattered houses along the road. I am not quite concentrate with my surroundings because of my heavy backpack. Not only that, I also forgot to take any photos during the walk, too tired to do something else in between my walk.
This is quite an interesting trip because I never did something adventurous like this before. The last walk I did was back to 2000, where I participate in “Belia Masuk Kampung” programme at Kg. Tiang Lama, Ranau, where we walk quite a while in the dark carrying our own bags to get to the village. This is what I call, “New Adventure Always Challenging and Interesting”.
This trip I need to do two things, first, I need to assist Raleigh Team on their Gravity Water System Project in this village and most of the things I do is communicate with the villagers. Second, I am doing a house to house survey on the possibilities of socio-economic projects that I can carry out in this village. Not an easy task to do when you did not have any point of contacts in the village. Zero, only a very little information I get from the old report back to 2009 programmed carried out here. So, I may say, I start from a little scratch. Quite interesting.
Arrive at the community hall and I stayed with the Raleigh Team there.
10th February 2012 (Friday)
Diary #2: Lost
What to do today? Walk to the primary school, looking for someone that I can talk with but not a good result. Met up with one of the villager and he told me, there were no men in the village for now because everyone is gone to the town. They were busy receiving their BR 1Malaysia. Without men in the village, how do I get assistance from the villagers to help Raleigh Team with the GWS? JKKK Chairman & Village Head is not in the village too. How? What to do? I am LOST.
11th February 2012 (Saturday)
Diary #3: Stranded
Wake up early as usual, following Raleigh daily schedule. Even though, I still feel very sleepy and lazy to wake up as early as the first bird song. Anyway, I am ready to go back to KM because I am supposed to go back today. My visit is only three days but actually I still didn’t get any information I need today. But, these past three days, heavy rain caused the water level in Nibang River arise. Therefore, my colleague can’t cross the river and they can’t get me out of the village too. So, I am stranded in the village till the weather changed.
I change my plan for the day. As the villagers pass by the community hall, they told me, the JKKK Chairman is in the village. Since I can’t go back today, I need to met up with the JKKK Chairman and discuss further on the GWS and also possibilities of the socio-economic projects. A HOPE begins here.
12th February 2012 (Sunday)
Diary #4: Hope
Things start slows but better to begin with something rather than nothing. This is a good start for the team. HOPE is in place. Even though we did not get any help yet but the leader of the village did promise us there will be a help for us tomorrow. Finger crossed but never lost hope. As for me, I must get to know more of the people in this village. This village will become my baby in future so I really need to start somewhere to create a good relationship with them. I need to gain their trust and hopefully they will see my sincerity. With that I put everything in God’s hand. I realize without Him taking part in whatever I am doing I will never success.
13th February 2012 (Monday)
Diary #5: Better
Slow but getting better. Today is a good sign when six villagers willing to help us, Jakiun, Nantui, Tododi, Magaya, Tinus and Jinudar. Six of hope that came by to lend their hands. Thank God for His kindness.
To be honest, I am not feeling well today. My right leg from my waist until my knees is so painful. I can’t really stand straight because it causes more pain on my waist. But, when the villagers are there to help us, I need to assist them. Ignore the pain, start with the work together with the villagers. So we start our work with identifying the breaks on the pipeline. We succeed identifying all 17 breaks on the pipe. Lucky us! That is why I say, today things become better than the day before. We are making progress.
14th February 2012 (Tuesday)
Diary #6: Love
HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY! It’s the day we celebrate the love that given by God to us to be shared with our families, friends and even strangers.
Divide the team into two groups. One, with carrying the rocks to the second tanks and the other group is replacing the break pipes. However as we go further with the pipes, we find more hidden breaks under the shrubs and underground. Therefore, we need to change our strategy, we need to recheck the pipe and yes, and we find even more breaks.
However, we manage to change a few breaking pipes and the other groups also making good progress by having more and more stones/gravel to the second tank. Good to see more things getting done. Thank God it’s Valentine’s Day too!
15th February 2012 (Wednesday)
Diary #7: Tough
The weather seems to be good and that is also a good sign right. Rainy days limits us from doing so many works but with this great weather more work can be done. Without recognizing that I am also having a sunburn on my face and behind my neck. Yai! It’s painful though.
The important task to be done today is transporting the two tanks to the village. A TOUGH one to be done if there is no help from the villagers. Lucky we have these two strong men helping us with floating the tanks to the village. Successfully done!
16th February 2012 (Thursday)
Diary #8: Sad
Today is my last day. My boss and my colleague are arriving today with Raleigh management team so, as well they are picking me up.
SAD? Yes, I am not feeling going back to KM now. I am happy helping the Raleigh team and get to know more about this village. I know more about who is in the village, what is the dynamic of the community in this village. I find out more and more interesting things going on in this village. They are accepting me more than a week ago. I am invited to enter the house, having a chit chat with the family and they are more open to share their stories with me. Now I can say, I feel WELCOME to this community. That is a huge success for me, a stranger from Sarawak, getting landed somewhere in the remote village of Pitas. A hardcore poverty community in whole Malaysia.
I am HAPPY to be here. God show me the way to help your people. I will RETURN to this village.
Anyone feel like to do some volunteer work on education especially teaching the adults Malay & English language? Or have any used clothes, shoes or bags? Feel free to drop a message in comments or just contact me. Little things that you do can make a big difference in others live. God bless.
Lots of Love,
Little Rose
